Professor Uche Onwudiegwu

Provost, College of MedicineUniversity on the Niger, Umunya, Anambra State, and Chief Medical Director, University on the Niger Teaching Hospital, Iyienu, Ogidi. He also serves as the Director, Centre for Educational Foundation & Research of the University.

Professor Onwudiegwu has held numerous senior academic and professional roles across Nigeria’s leading institutions. He was pioneer Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Niger Delta University (2010–2012); Dean, Faculty of Science at Bayelsa Medical University (2019–2024); pioneer Director, Institute of Medical Education (2019–present); Chairman, Senate Business Committee (2019–2024); and Provost, College of Medicine (2024) of Bayelsa Medical University, Yenagoa.

He served as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1999–2019) and Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist (1988–2019) at the Obafemi Awolowo University and its Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, where he also twice served as Head of Department and Chairman, Business Committee of Senate.

A graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1979), he became a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1987. His professional journey includes several prestigious international fellowships and training programs:

  • Takemi Fellow in International Health — Harvard University School of Public Health (1993/94)
  • Gynaecology Oncology Fellow — University Academiska Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden (1994)
  • Gynaecology Oncology Fellow — St. Bartholomew’s Oncology Hospital, London (2002)
  • Medical Education Fellow — University of Illinois at Chicago / FAIMER (2004/05)
  • Reproductive Health Fellow — Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, Baltimore (1987 & 2009)

His clinical interests include cervical oncology, safer motherhood, quality maternal care, and adolescent reproductive health. He is a renowned medical education expert and an International Fellow in Medical Education (with distinction) from FAIMER, USA. His specialization covers Curriculum Development, Pedagogy, and Assessment Techniques.

Professor Onwudiegwu currently serves as President of the Nigerian Association of Medical Educators and Executive Director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Medical Education in Nigeria (FAMED). He pioneered the introduction of the OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) model in Nigeria, facilitating its adoption in over 15 medical schools and within the West African College of Surgeons.

A prolific scholar, he has authored and co-authored over 85 journal articles and books, and conducted more than 100 training workshops on medical education across Africa and beyond. His dedication continues to shape the next generation of healthcare educators and practitioners.

Professor Onwudiegwu is a member of several esteemed professional bodies including the Harvard Alumni Association, Association of UICC Fellows, Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
